An Ode To The Blues is a Bangalore based Blues music festival that pays it’s tribute to the Blues – past, present and future. Set up in 2011, this sonic change occurred in the city’s music scene when the 100th birthday of Robert Johnson was celebrated. What started out as an idea for a gig, An Ode To The Blues is synonymous with the nation’s Blues music scene. This multiple format festival involves live music performances, spontaneous busking, film screenings, LP listening sessions, discourses and workshops. The sole aim of this festival is to spread the blues as a music form. Steeped in rich history and cultural change, this music form has progressively evolved over the years, but still acknowledges it’s original roots. The festival which travels across different parts of Bangalore will see the finale at CounterCulture with a super star line up of some of the finest blues musicians.

The Line up is:

Soulmate – Powerhouse Blues band from Shillong led by Tipriti K Bangar & Rudy Wallang. Their sound is the reason why the Blues is alive and thriving in the country. Old school Blues riffing coupled with untapped stage energy and pure heart Soulmate are what the Blues is all about.

Ministry of Blues – Four piece Blues riot consisting of Philipe Haydon on guitars, Vinoo Matthew on Bass, Rauf on Keyboards and Guru Somayaji on Drums. Their wildfire stage act is unmatched as they reel in the years of playing some great shows.

The Chronic Blues Circus – One of the nation’s long standing Blues acts fronted by Peter Isaac, Chronic Blues Circus has stood through the years putting out great music and pumping new life into the ever changing ever decadent music scene. Everything analog and everything Blues.

By2 Blues – Formed around the time of last year’s An Ode to the Blues, By2 Blues is a home grown Bangalore based harmonica and guitar Blues project featuring Ananth Menon and Vasudev Prabhu. Their charisma and chemistry makes for a great act.

Shayne Ballantyne Jr – From the place where everyone loves their music Shayne comes from Goa spreading the vibe of Blues and the ocean wherever he plays. A very well versed guitarist, Shayne is an act not to be missed.

Windoze – Windoze are an interesting bunch of musicians coming together and creating a great feet tapping mix of blues/ reggae and funk. Fronted by Sylvester Pradeep [Shickados/ Solder], this band has a great line up of musicians – Hemanth [Old Jungle Saying], Abhilash [Chronic Blues Circus, Shickados] and Arnold. They first sprang to attention with a wonderful opening tribute to Robert Johnson at ‘An Ode to the Blues,’ one of Bangalore’s biggest blues festival at CounterCulture. Windoze might be young, but their fiery act with pitch perfect harmonies, perfect guitar tone will keep you focused right into their blues.

It was set up in 1987 after Sam having visited a village of Noakhali (Bangladesh) where he interacted with traditional musicians and dancers.

The sound system developed its repertoire and found its identity as a State of Bengal.

State of Bengal’s reputation for pushing the boundaries to produce eclectic albums as well as his archives of dance tracks has gained him further and continued respect as one of the innovators and pioneers of the British Asian music scene.

Sulk Station is an electronic/triphop duo from Bangalore formed by Tanvi Rao and Rahul Giri. Their music is driven by Tanvi Rao’s sultry vocals wrapped in a haze of atmospherics, minimal beats and homegrown synth sounds. Their songs are a mix of contemporary electronic genres (trip-hop/post-dubstep/ambient) with traces of Indian classical music.

The duo came together first in early 2009 to play a collaborative opening set for Mouse on Mars (Germany). Sulk Station has been gigging regularly since across venues and festivals (Bflat, Bacchus, CounterCulutre, The Big Junction Jam festival etc.)

Catch them Live at CounterCulture 28 April 8 30pm onwards.
